Washington, DC - Avalere Health today announced it has elected Eva Teig Hardy to its board of directors.  Hardy is a veteran policy and communications executive with deep background in how government and business interact and influence one another.

Over her 40 year career, Hardy has been a leader in both government and corporate spheres, successfully navigating the critical intersection between the two.  She spent nearly two decades in local and state government, most notably serving as the Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry for Gov. Charles S. Robb (D), and then Secretary of Health and Human Resources under Governor Gerald L. Baliles.  In this latter cabinet-level position, Hardy oversaw 17 state agencies providing health, social services, and rehabilitation programs for Virginia’s most vulnerable citizens, and a total biennial budget of $4.5 billion.  Among many accomplishments, she helped significantly increase community-based mental health services.  Programs shaped under Hardy were credited for their focus on early, high value healthcare interventions, and how government can run efficiently and with a greater sense of accountability.

Hardy then transitioned into the private sector, where she spent two decades as an executive focused on corporate communications, public affairs, and policy in the energy sector.  As executive vice president of public policy and corporate communications for Dominion Virginia Power, Hardy helped to shape Dominion’s identity and external engagement strategy during the state’s debate over re-regulation of energy, and led efforts to increase Dominion’s brand reputation.  When she retired, then as Executive VP for Dominion Resources, her responsibilities spanned a ten-state operation, and included federal and state relations, philanthropy, public affairs, and corporate communications for this Fortune 500 company.  During her tenure at Dominion, Hardy was nationally acknowledged as one of the highest ranking, most visible, and most effective female executives.

Recently Hardy served as interim state director for U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner.  She serves on several boards including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Foundation, the Oliver Hill Foundation, the George Washington Foundation, and the Virginia Holocaust Museum.  She has served as vice chair of the State Council of Higher Education and on the Board of Trustees of her alma mater, Hood College.

Her awards include: Lifetime Achievement Award from the Urban League of Greater Richmond; Outstanding Women of Greater Richmond in Government and Politics by the YWCA; Newsmaker of the Year from the Virginia Press Women Association; Thomas Jefferson Award from the Richmond Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America; Oliver W. Hill Citizen of the Year; the Leadership Metro Richmond Aręte Award; and the L. Douglas Wilder Public Service Award from Virginia Commonwealth University. Recently, she was inducted into the VCU Communications Hall of Fame and received an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Norfolk State University.

“Eva has deep experience in the nexus of public policy and business strategy, and understands that the ability to communicate ideas is key to shaping good policy,” said Dan Mendelson, CEO of Avalere Health.  “These are core tenets of our firm, and we are thrilled to welcome Eva to our board.”
