Washington, DC – Avalere Health today announced that Kristi Mitchell and Lisa Shah, MD, have joined the firm, contributing their extensive clinical expertise to Avalere’s expanding work within evidence-based medicine, performance measurement, and quality improvement.

Kristi Mitchell joins Avalere as a vice president, coming from the American College of Cardiology, where she spent 12 years, most recently as Chief Scientific Officer.  Mitchell played a pivotal role in ACC’s registries and performance-measurement work, providing strategic and operational leadership in the development of quality-improvement and registry products.  She oversaw these products through all stages, including conceptualization, feasibility, definition, development, launch, and post-market evaluation.

During her time at ACC, Mitchell regularly interacted with federal agencies – including the FDA, CMS, AHRQ, and the VA – and served as ACC’s primary contact with major pharmaceutical, medical device, and electronic medical records companies.  She also worked regularly with the National Quality Forum, Ambulatory Care Quality Alliance, Certification Commission for HIT, and American Board of Internal Medicine and collaborated with The Brookings Institution on a value-based purchasing initiative.  ACC recently gave Mitchell a lifetime achievement award for her leadership in developing the National Cardiovascular Data Registry, the nation’s largest cardiovascular clinical database, testifying to her valuable contributions to the organization.

In addition to ACC, Mitchell also held positions at the Battelle Memorial Institute Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation, the Institute for Health Policy Studies at University of California-San Francisco, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health.  She has a BA from Brown University, an MPH from the University of Michigan, and is completing her doctorate at the George Washington University.

Lisa Shah, MD, joins Avalere as a senior manager.  Shah comes to Avalere from the University of Chicago, where she was a hospitalist, clinical researcher, and instructor of medicine.  At the University of Chicago, Shah’s research interests focused on quality improvement, medication adherence, and clinical guideline implementation.  In addition, she co-directed the Hospitalist Medicine Fellowship Program, part of University of Chicago Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERT). This program brought hospitalists from throughout the country to the University of Chicago to participate in the Summer Outcomes Research Training Program, with a focus on introducing academic hospitalists to outcomes research and setting them on a track to increase academic productivity.

Lisa holds a BA in English and Spanish from Duke University, an MD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and a Masters in Public Policy from the University of Chicago.  She completed a fellowship in health outcomes research and her residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Chicago, is board certified, and continues to practice clinical medicine as a hospitalist.

“Healthcare purchasers in both the public and private sectors are increasingly asking for proof of value in healthcare spending,” said Tanisha Carino, PhD, vice president of Avalere Health and director of its Center on Evidence-Based Medicine. “Kristi and Lisa’s deep clinical expertise and strong understanding of quality improvement and performance measurement will be invaluable to Avalere as we continue to strengthen our capabilities in this area to meet client demand.”
