Kalipso Chalkidou,
Director,
NICE

Kalipso Chalkidou, is the director of NICE’s international programme, responsible for working with governments and governmental agencies abroad interested in using evidence to inform healthcare policy decisions. Previous positions include associate director of research and development at NICE, clinical research fellow at the University of Newcastle Medical School and surgical trainee in NHS hospitals in Newcastle and Cambridge.

She holds a doctorate on the molecular biology of prostate cancer from the University of Newcastle (UK), an MD(Hons) from the University of Athens (Greece) and is an honorary lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (UK), a senior advisor on international policy at the Center for Medical Technology Policy (USA) and visiting faculty at the Berman Institute for Bioethics, Johns Hopkins University (USA). She has published peer-reviewed articles in basic science, clinical medicine and health policy journals, including the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, Health Affairs, Milbank Quarterly and Health Economics. Between 2007 and 2008, she spent a year at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and the Center for Medical Technology Policy, as a Harkness fellow in Health Policy and Practice, studying conditional coverage and drug pricing policies.
