Ted Okon’s professional life has encompassed several varied healthcare endeavors, all of which have culminated in his passion: improving the quality of life of people fighting cancer.
Ted began his career over 25 years ago within the healthcare industry. In the early years of his career, he worked for several major healthcare companies, including Warner-Lambert/Parke Davis & Co. (subsequently merged with Pfizer), Merck, and IMS America, in a variety of marketing and management positions. His interest in developing more accurate and practical healthcare databases led him to found Medical Marketing Group, Inc. (MMG), a company that pioneered the use of sophisticated databases to provide utilization patterns on prescription pharmaceuticals. Ted took MMG public in what was the second most successful public offering of the year. MMG was subsequently purchased as part of the merger of Merck and Medco, the leading drug benefit manager.
Ted added to his experience by working with oncology professionals at the West Clinic, a community oncology clinic in Memphis, Tennessee, as well as other oncology practices around the country. Two of Ted’s special interests are the applications of information technology to improve information collected from and provided to cancer patients at the point-of-care and clinical research, currently a very inefficient and labor-intensive process. These interests resulted in the founding of two companies: Supportive Oncology Services, Inc. and Accelerated Community Oncology Research Network, Inc. Ted has served as CEO of both companies.
Ted has also traveled extensively to India, China, Singapore, and the Middle East to assess opportunities of bringing American cancer care and oncology clinic operations to those rapidly growing parts of the world.
Responding to the needs of community oncology to have its own dedicated advocacy presence, Ted was a co-founder of the Community Oncology Alliance (COA). The mission of COA is to protect and foster the community oncology delivery system, which treats 84% of Americans with cancer. COA was formed in January 2003 and has been actively involved in bringing the voice of community cancer care to Washington, DC. Ted currently serves as Executive Director of COA.
Ted holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Fairfield University and an MBA from Carnegie-Mellon University. He resides in Connecticut with his wife Susan. They have a daughter, Katherine, who lives in Washington, DC and works for a capital management firm. Ted donates his time to several charitable causes including serving on the Board of the Wings Cancer Foundation.
