Michael Neuss, MD

I was born in Indianapolis and after graduating from the University of Michigan took all my medical training at Duke where Harvey Cohen and Jack Feussner were my research advisors during my fellowship in hematology and medical oncology. Since leaving Durham, I have been in private practice in Cincinnati, where my wife and I have lived since 1985 and where we raised our two children.

In addition to the usual community and hospital volunteer committee work, I became involved with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in 2002 and have served on the Health Services, Quality of Care, and Clinical Practice Committees.

I became involved with ASCO through the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative at the invitation of Joe Simone and with my friends the late Chris Desch, Joe Jacobson, Kristen McNiff, Peter Eisenberg and Pam Kadlubek (among others), have worked to develop this program. In our fall, 2008 data collection round, comparative information from approximately 250 practices and 15,000 patients was submitted over a three week time period.

It is our hope that the QOPI program will serve as a certification vehicle for outpatient chemotherapy administration. Our goal has always been to promote excellence in cancer care for patients who deserve the best care we can provide, with minimal unnecessary variation, maximal adherence to reasonable guidelines, and respect and attention to each patient’s circumstance and wishes.
