J. Russell Hoverman, M.D., Ph.D.

J. Russell Hoverman, M.D., Ph.D. specializes in hematology and medical oncology and is board certified in internal medicine and hematology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Hoverman serves as the vice president of managed care for Texas Oncology and is the medical director of managed care and disease management for US Oncology. He oversees the Texas Oncology Quality and Peer Review programs and participates in collaborative initiatives with managed care payers. Dr. Hoverman also serves as a member of the US Oncology Pathways Task Force and Practice Quality and Efficiency Committees, and has been an important part of the nationwide safety program. He has a long-standing interest in improving communication between patients and physicians, especially for those patients with terminal illnesses at the end of their lives and is a strong supporter of hospice programs.

Dr. Hoverman received his Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and his medical degree from Duke University in Durham, N.C. He completed his internship in internal medicine at Albany Hospital in Albany, N.Y., from 1971-1972, his residency in Internal Medicine at Baylor Affiliated hospitals in Houston, Texas, from 1974-76, and his fellowship in hematology and oncology at Duke University and Baylor Affiliated Hospitals in Houston, Texas, finishing in 1977. He served as chief resident in medicine during his residency at Baylor. Dr. Hoverman received his doctorate in philosophy from The University of Texas in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Hoverman is the president of the American Cancer Society, Central Texas Division; a member of the Steering Committee for the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative; chairman of the Ethics Committee for Hospice Austin; and serves as the Texas Oncology representative to the Cancer Quality Alliance. He also serves as a State of Texas ethics consultant for advance directives in state facilities and for the committee to plan for an influenza pandemic. He is a former member of the Seton Hospitals Ethics Council, a former member of the Hospice Austin Board of Directors, and was a founding member of the St. David’s Hospital Ethics Committee in Austin, Texas.
