What challenges and opportunities face the cancer community? Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer, American Cancer Society, described key trends in cancer epidemiology. He also related how changes in cancer prevention, screening, treatment, and survival rates are affecting Americans at the aggregate and individual levels. Brawley's session examined delivery and coverage of cancer care in the context of rising cost pressures, calls for stronger evidence, and concerns about disparities in access and quality. He said the focus must be on the rationale use of healthcare, getting preventative messages out, and directing screening efforts on areas where there is the most potential to save lives.
