James Hereford
Executive Vice President,
Strategic Services and Quality
James Hereford is executive vice president of Strategic Services and Quality at Group Health Cooperative, one of the nation’s largest consumer-governed health care systems. His responsibilities include strategic oversight of technology, quality, human resources, and strategic planning.
Hereford has been instrumental in the development of secure Web portals for Group Health contracted providers, employers, brokers, and members at www.ghc.org. He oversaw the implementation of a comprehensive electronic medical record for patients at Group Health–operated medical centers and clinics—one of the nation’s largest. He has also been a key figure in the implementation of a Lean-based management and improvement system at Group Health.
Hereford has held various positions in service quality and health informatics during his 17 years at Group Health. He holds a Bachelor and a Masters of Science in Mathematics from Montana State University.
Hereford is a faculty member at the University of Washington, where he has taught operations management in the Master of Health Administration program. Hereford is chair of the Washington State Health Care Authority Health Information Infrastructure Advisory Board, commissioned to create a statewide clinical data sharing infrastructure, and sits on the board of OneHealthPort, a shared technology security service. He is a frequent speaker nationally on operational improvement through the use of Lean and technology.
